Zuri (aka Zuzu Beans) is one of the strongest Ratties we've ever met. She was abandoned in the sugar cane Fields by Belle Glade (FL), and evaded capture for over a month. Abandonment leaves scars on a dog's heart. A tireless volunteer in the area went daily to feed this little, skinny, flighty creature for a month. After that month, the trust was gained, and Zuri was rescued. Her rescuer wasn't looking for a new dog, but she wanted to help her. Our contacts in the area had alerted us to her story and we agreed to take her in, not knowing anything at all except she's a Rat Terrier, and female. When we met Zuri, her bright eyes and underbite got us right in the heart. We were packed with dogs in the rescue, but we committed to her and have never looked back. Unfortunately, this lovely girl came with a slew of medical issues. She has heartworms, and she also has been battling anemia. We are on the right track in regards to the anemia, and her RBC (red blood cell) numbers are in normal range now - after 2 months of medications to stabilize her. Zuri has been treated for heartworms, but will likely need another round of 3 injections 9 months after her original treatment. This is all a condensed version of her story. Zuri is vaccinated, spayed and micro-chipped. She is on a few daily medications, plus probiotics. Zuri needs a special diet due to on and off again pancreatitis, and losing protein in her urine. Throughout the months of treatments, she has remained bouncy, spritely, and extremely sweet. Zuri will be on medical hold thru the Fall of 2024. We hope at that point we can change her status from "Medical Hold" to "Adoptable". Donations are greatly appreciated to help with the cost of her daily medications, two of which we can only get from compounding pharmacies, as well as for her special diets. Zuri is 4 to 6 years old, and ranges between 9 and 10 pounds.
